This harsh weather of January can make the body vulnerable to various diseases and dehydration is one of the main reasons behind it. Usually, people reduce water intake during winters but science says otherwise. Scientifically, human bodies are made up of around 50-70% of water of your body weight, therefore, water plays a huge role for a sane mind and healthy body.
Water, with scientific definition, is a component of hydrogen and oxygen, and helps in digestion and bowel movement. Additionally, a hydrated body is a lubricant that provides a cushion situation to bone joints. According to the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, women and men are advised to have different water intakes, unlike the popular belief in social media of 8 ounces of water per day.
He said while talking about appropriate water intake, “The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine suggest that each day women get a total of about 2.7 liters (L), or 11 cups, of fluid and men get about 3.7 L (16 cups). About 20% of daily fluid intake usually comes from food and the rest from drinks.”
If you want to know if you’re not mistaking your water intake, the doctor advised you to find answers in the color of your urine. According to him, “A quick and easy way to check if you are getting enough water overall is to take a peek at the colour of your urine. If you consume enough, the urine colour will be a pale-yellow colour. If it is a dark yellow or amber colour, you may need to increase the amount you consume.”
Another dilemma that most of us face is whether we should sit while drinking water or not. Dr. Sunil Chaudhary, Consultant, Internal Medicine, Fortis Escorts, Okhla Road, New Delhi, explained, “There is no strict rule about whether one should drink water standing or sitting; the key is to stay hydrated. While traditional practices suggest potential digestive effects, scientific evidence is limited. Focus on maintaining hydration throughout the day rather than the posture while drinking.”
When taking medications, it is advisable to use water rather than milk. Milk contains minerals like magnesium and calcium, which may interact with the active ingredients in medicines, potentially hindering their absorption. Therefore, opting for water helps ensure the optimal effectiveness of the medication.
