Apple is giving CES 2024 a miss but here’s how it could steal its thunder

Apple doesn’t do CES. It isn’t doing CES this year, too. But even without being there in person, it could steal the grand tech event’s thunder. According to online reports, Cupertino is gearing up for a big “Vision Pro” related announcement in the same week CES officially kicks off for technology enthusiasts from around the world in Las Vegas. Moreover, Apple’s inaugural mixed reality headset, its next big thing, seems on schedule to launch and go on sale sometime in February. It was first announced in June of 2023.
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman is reporting that Apple has started shipping “small quantities” of the Vision Pro to warehouses across the US from where they will be distributed to Apple retail stores. Note the emphasis on small quantities as Apple isn’t expected to make the headset in bulk —like the iPhone and iPad for instance— owing to its high cost and less demand. The same reason why, it isn’t launching it in more markets globally. Though, the report tips “sufficient” supply at least in the US.
Even though its exorbitant pricing may keep it out of reach from every iPhone user on the planet, Apple CEO Tim Cook is optimistic about the Vision Pro’s potential and future prospects and there are reports that peg a more affordable version is already in the works. Powered by its M2 chip, the Vision Pro will initially be sold in the US from where it is expected to launch in markets like the UK and Canada in late 2024. The headset is highly unlikely to launch in India.
