Weather Update- IMD issues cold wave warning, dense fog to affect northwest & east India – Details here

As northern states of the country continue to experience cold wave conditions, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has stated that moderate to dense fog cover will likely continue over some parts of the plains of northwest & east India during the next 3 days.
The fog conditions are likely to prevail during night & morning hours in some parts of Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttrakhand for the next two days.
Fog conditions observed (at 0530 hours IST of today): Very Dense Fog observed in isolated pockets of East UP, West MP & Bihar; Dense Fog in isolated pockets of West UP & Rajasthan and Moderate Fog in isolated pockets of Jammu Division, Haryana & East MP. 1/3
— India Meteorological Department (@Indiametdept) January 3, 2024Taking to microblogging site X, IMD mentioned that, “Very dense fog observed in isolated pockets of east UP, west Madhya Pradesh & Bihar. Dense fog in isolated pockets of west UP & Rajasthan and moderate fog in isolated pockets of Jammu Division, Haryana & East Madhya Pradesh.”
Visibility is between 0 and 50 meters when there is ‘Very dense’ fog. Between 51 and 200 meters is considered ‘dense’, 201 and 500 meters is ‘moderate’, and 501 and 1,000 meters is ‘shallow.’
The dense fog conditions will also affect visibility in states like Assam, Meghalaya, and Nagaland along with other northeastern states.
Cold wave warning and plummeting temperatureThe minimum temperatures are in the range of 6-9°C over most parts of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, West Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan. Over north Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal & Sikkim, and north Chhattisgarh, the temperature will be in the range of 10-12°C.Further, these are above normal temperatures by 2-4°C over many parts of Punjab,Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and GujaratDuring January 2024, monthly minimum temperatures are most likely to be above normal in many parts of the country, except in some parts of north India, where normal to below-normal minimum temperatures are likely, the Director General of Meteorology, Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said.
Southern and central states to witness rain showersUnder the influence of an easterly wave and the above low-pressure area, light to moderate rainfall at some places is very likely over south Tamil Nadu, south Kerala, and Lakshadweep during the next 3-4 days.Besides, isolated heavy rainfall is predicted in Lakshadweep, south Tamil Nadu, and Kerala on January 4 and 5. Light isolated rainfall is also likely over Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh between January 3 and 5.
