Heavy fuel leaked from the power station on Wednesday night In Manipur’s Imphal, leading to the contamination of streams that run through villages such as Kanto Sabal and Sekmai.
The spillage impacted water bodies flowing through Kanto Sabal and Sekmai villages, ultimately merging with the crucial Imphal River downstream, which serves as a lifeline for the region.
The cause of the spill is yet to be determined, with investigations considering both the possibility of intentional sabotage and accidental leakage.

Heavy machinery was deployed to divert the flow of the water in the affected streams towards fields, an official told PTI. “It is yet to be determined if miscreants were involved in this or if it was accidental,” he added.
Nongmai, a resident of Kanto Sabal, expressed the gravity of the situation, stressing the severe impact on both the environment and the well-being of those dependent on the contaminated water.
“Not just aquatic life but also the communities that depend on the water have been severely threatened by this spill,” said Nongmai.
