Bhopal’s Raja Bhoj International Airport granted Immigration Check Post status, here’s what it means

In a significant development, the Central Government has officially designated Raja Bhoj International Airport in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, as an authorized Immigration Check Post for entry into or exit from India. This decision, per the Passport (Entry into India) Rules 1950, holds implications for all classes of passengers.

A notification issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Thursday not only declared Raja Bhoj International Airport as an authorized Immigration Check Post but also appointed the Chief Immigration Officer at the airport as the ‘Civil Authority’ for the Immigration Check Post’s purposes. This move aligns with the powers conferred by sub-clause (2) of Clause 2 of the Foreigners Order 1948. However, the MHA notification did not mention the date of the officer’s appointment, leaving this key detail unanswered.

Facilities and Readiness for International Flights

Spanning an area of 26,936 sq meters, the terminal building of Raja Bhoj International Airport boasts 14 check-in counters, four immigration counters for departures, and six immigration counters for arrivals. The recent notification comes nearly two months after the airport prepared for international flights, establishing green and red channels and installing Immigration e-gates.

Preparations for Custom Airport Status

As the airport gears up for international flights, preparations include the installation of electronic gates, the establishment of immigration counters, and the creation of green and red channels adhering to international standards. The customs counters have also been set up in anticipation of the airport gaining custom airport status.

Increased Security Measures

Recognizing the need for heightened security at an international-level airport, the airport authority has requested the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) to augment the number of security personnel. In response, the BCAS has given in-principle approval to increase the current deployment of 170 security personnel to 400 in the future, ensuring a secure and efficient international travel experience.
